Star Fissure
From D'ni - The Myst Wiki
The Star Fissure is a pivotal location in the entire Myst series. It is located on the age of Riven, and eventually leads to the home of The Stranger, presumably Earth. Although many of its properties are discovered, its origin is still unknown, as, to the best of our knowledge, Gehn did not write it into the age purposefully.
[edit] Star Fissure in Relation to the Myst Series
- In Myst: The Book of Atrus, Atrus jumps into the Star Fissure with The Myst linking book. He then links to the age, leaving the linking book falling freely into the Star Fissure
- At the beginning of Myst, the linking book is found by The Stranger, presumably on Earth.
- While Gehn is trapped on Riven between the events in Myst: The Book of Atrus and Riven, he conducts many experiments with the inhabitants of Riven by casting them into the Star Fissure. He also observes the rotation of the stars in the fissure, and discovers that it exhibits a circular orbit.
- At the end of Riven, the Star Fissure is opened again. It begins to slowly consume the objects very close to it. The Riven linking book is then dropped into it, followed shortly by The Stranger falling into it. A voice over by Atrus explains that he knows that the Fissure will safely guide The Stranger to where he came from (this is proved to be true, as the character returns in subsequent Myst games).
- Unfortunately, the Star Fissure is no longer able to be observed, as it helped contribute to the imminent destruction of the age of Riven, and the age can no longer be safely visited.
- The last piece of possible evidence known about the Star Fissure is contained in Uru. In the beginning, at the cleft, the telescope from Riven is seen buried in the ground. Additionally, the gigantic stone Moiety dagger from Riven can be found inside the volcano's crater nearby the cleft. This suggests that, as the telescope and dagger fell into the Star Fissure at the end of Riven, that the Star Fissure does lead to Earth, and that it leads to The Cleft, which physically resembles the fissure in shape. This could also shed some light on the identity of The Stranger, as he would have found the Myst linking book near the Cleft. (see The Stranger for more discussion of his identity)
- It is believed that the Fissure is simply space; this would mean that the Ages are planets.
